What is Commercial General Liability (CGL) Insurance?

Throughout the course of daily business, your company will potentially face multiple liabilities. A Commercial General Liability (CGL) Insurance policy is your business’ first line of defense against many common claims.

Commercial General Liability Insurance covers claims of either property damage or bodily injury (or other physical injury.)  This coverage is frequently offered in a package with Property Insurance to protect businesses against incidents that may occur on the main premises (or at other covered locations) where you conduct business. Commercial General Liability Insurance enables your business to continue daily operations while it faces claims (real or fraudulent) of certain types of negligence or wrongdoing.

The Most Basic of Business Insurance:

If your company has only one form of business insurance, it most probably is Commercial General Liability Insurance. CGL policies cover claims in four basic categories of business liability:

  • Advertising Injury
  • Bodily Injury
  • Property Damage
  • Personal Injury (includes libel or slander)

In addition to covering the specific claim types listed above, Commercial General Liability policies also cover the associated costs to defend or settle claims, even when these claims are deemed to be fraudulent.

Commercial General Liability Insurance protects your business against potential financial loss that can result from claims of injury or damage  caused to others by either you or your employees. (Some coverage types may not be available on all policies, or in all states.)

  • Automatic Additional Insured: This coverage is automatically provided when required (via written contract, agreement or permit.)
  • Defense Costs: Coverage pays legal expenses for your business against certain liability claims, regardless of who is at fault.
  • Employment Practices Liability: Covers claims, including legal defense costs, for specific types of employment-related lawsuits brought against your business, by either employees or job applicants ($5,000 limit where available).
  • Medical Expenses: Coverage pays applicable medical costs if someone is injured and needs medical treatment due to an accident on your business premises.
  • Personal and Advertising Injury: Covers your company for potential offenses you or your employees may commit in the course of business (including but limited to: libel, slander, disparagement, or copyright infringement) in your advertisements.
  • Premises and Operations Liability: Coverage for bodily injury and/or property damage that may be sustained by others at your company premises, or as a result of your business’ operations.
  • Tenant’s Liability: This coverage protects your business against claims of damage due to fire (or other covered losses) deemed to be caused by you to premises, that you rent.

Note:  Examine your policy carefully for any exclusions, limitations, or other terms or conditions that may affect coverage.  This summary only outlines in general terms the coverages that may be afforded under some insurance policies.  The terms and conditions of your business’ individual policy prevail.
